In praise of gatekeepers

Whenever you see managers who are really leading, who are able to prioritize their time and focus on the strategic and people aspect of the role, the chances are they have a great gatekeeper working for them.

Whether you call these gatekeepers Chiefs of Staff, Personal Assistants or – not a favourite word of mine – “admins”, they are essential to the high performance of their bosses.

Gatekeepers help managers to lead

In the fifteen years or more that I have been helping managers and their teams, I believe that I can predict how able a manager is to adjust to change by the quality of the gatekeeper who works for him or her.

After all, in a change process you need to protect and manage your time in order to focus on new ways of doing things and not fall into old, easy habits.  Whoever has control of your diary has the power to make or break that change.

The biggest lie: “I have no time.”

If you want to change anything significant in your life you need to nail this lie.

Whether it is exercising more, changing the direction of your business or becoming a better leader to your team, most of us need to challenge this most insidious of self-limiting beliefs that what is stopping us is a lack of time.

I’ve written before that I believe effective time management  is the very first thing needed to be a true leader – without that skill you just have over-busy, stressed managers.

Whenever I run a leadership program, I ask participants to list what they consider to be the essential traits of effective leadership.  Along with “being trusted”, there are always those old clichés of “having vision”, or worse “charisma”.

Don’t get me wrong.  Charisma is a wonderful trait, but it’s what I would term decorative.  It’s a nice to have, alongside a great smile and a welcoming handshake.

Time management is not decorative. Or optional. It is the very foundation of effective leadership.
